Stormwater Management
The office of Public Works manages the storm drainage system for all Middlesex County roadways. This includes maintaining the water flow into and out of our storm drains. We also maintain the stream banks where our system outfalls into local waterways. We ensure that anything that goes down the storm drains doesn't pollute our lakes, streams, or rivers.
What is stormwater?
Human activity is largely responsible for stormwater pollution. Everything that we put on the ground or into the storm drain can end up in our water. Each of us has a responsibility to make sure these contaminants stay out of our water. Whether we have clean water is up to you.
The official definition of stormwater under the New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NJPDES) regulations at N.J.A.C. 7:14A is as follows:
'Stormwater' means water resulting from precipitation (including rain and snow) that runs off the land's surface, is transmitted to the subsurface, or is captured by separate storm sewers or other sewage or drainage facilities, or conveyed by snow removal equipment.
Please contact Edward Kuchie at 732-940-3800 if you see:
- Clogged Storm Drains - Rain water not flowing down the storm drain properly
- Road or Stream Erosion - Soil that has been washed away from roadsides or stream banks
- Illicit Connection - Any pipe draining something other than rain water into a storm basin
