Community Awareness
The Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office Community Awareness Unit provides numerous crime prevention and community programs free of charge to the residents and businesses of Middlesex County. Some of these programs include Fingerprints on File for school-age children, Senior Scams and Fraud Prevention, Internet Safety and Cyber bullying, Fatal Vision/ Drunk Driving education, Senior Citizen Medical Identification Program, Stranger Danger Program, Drug lectures, Distracted Driver Awareness, and Child Passenger Safety / Car seat Installation just to name a few.
Fun and Educational Activities for school kids:
Fingerprinting: Delving into forensics. A fun activity for the kids, where officers fingerprint school children from kindergarten through 9th grade on a card. This card is given to the child’s parents.
K-9 Demonstrations – K-9 officers will demonstrate how their dogs locate explosive devices/guns and ammunition, and drugs/paraphernalia and tracking at schools and other locations.
Career Day-traveling to different schools at all grade levels, to reiterate the importance of continuing education for all careers, while speaking specifically about Sheriff’s Office functions.
Stranger Danger-Teaching the difference between good/bad strangers, as well as what to do and who to trust in certain situations to school aged children.
Sheriff’s Jr. Police Academy-A summer program for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders that incorporates our educational DARE program with a police academy experience for elementary and middle school students
Bike Safety-Educating school aged children with safe bicycle/ scooter/skate practices, how to be safe while riding your bike on the road.
Fatal Vision Program – Through the use of special goggles that simulate someone under the influence of alcohol, Sheriff officers teach the dangers of drinking and driving.
Educational Outreach for Community:
Cyberbullying/Bullying/Internet Safety- Educators and Law Enforcement officers teach Kindergartners, parents, seniors how to be safe while using the internet. Officers speak to students/youth about how to recognize cyberbullying, as well as what steps to take to prevent it, and what to do if it occurs. The officers also educate Parents/Caregivers on what the youth is doing on the internet and how to observe the signs of cyberbullying.
Senior Safety-Working with seniors on how to make their home a safer environment, as well as safety outside the home.
K-9 Demonstrations – K-9 officers will demonstrate how their dogs locate explosive devices/guns and ammunition, and drugs/paraphernalia at schools and other locations.
Car Seat Installation – Officers are Certified CPS Technicians who provide public with free safety checks of car seats/installation.
AngelSense – Tracking device for Kids, Teens, and Seniors. SafeGuard GPS for continuous, all-day monitoring, live location tracking maps assistive speakerphone, search and rescue tools (device alarm), fall detection etc.
Scams and Frauds – Officers will lecture on the characteristics of scams, frauds and cons along with how to identify and avoid them. They will teach you what to look out for and the clues that crooks leave lying around in social and conventional media, everyday communications, or at your doorstep to different social organizations and senior centers.

Annual Activities organized by the Sheriff’s office:
Coloring book contest: Teaching safety to elementary school kids, 4th graders via a coloring book contest. The contest is open to all the students in 4th grade in the county. Kids are encouraged to submit black and white artwork related to Bike Safety, Personal Safety, and a Safety Calendar. The artworks are then compiled in coloring books and distributed to schools to further promote the message.
D.A.R.E./Keeping it Real- 10-week (30-45min) K-12 comprehensive teaching program which addresses drugs, violence, bullying, internet safety, and other high-risk circumstances that today are too often a part of a students’ lives.
Civilian Academy-An eight-week program that is designed to educate residents and local citizens on the various functions and duties of the Sheriff’s Office. The Academy is made up of Citizens of Middlesex County ranging in age from 18 and older.
College Internship Program
A semester-wide program that is offered to college students for credit.
