Expanding Access to World-Class Oncology Care and Advancing Cancer Research
Middlesex County is driving healthcare innovation with a $25 million investment in the Jack & Sheryl Cancer Center—New Jersey’s first free-standing comprehensive cancer pavilion. This state-of-the-art facility is the result of a collaboration between Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), RWJBarnabas Health, the New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO), and the City of New Brunswick. As part of the NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center will offer patients cutting-edge cancer care, access to the latest research breakthroughs, and unparalleled oncology care—all under one roof.
Set to open in May 2025 in New Brunswick, the 12-story, 520,000-square-foot world-class facility will house an array of advanced oncology services provided by Rutgers Cancer Institute and RWJBarnabas Health. The center will also feature world-class research laboratories, enabling physician-scientists to translate groundbreaking discoveries from the lab to the bedside—transforming cancer care and improving patient outcomes.
Strengthening Healthcare Education and Workforce Development
Middlesex County's investment in the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center extends beyond patient care—it is also creating new opportunities for education and workforce development. Through a strategic partnership with RWJBarnabas Health, the County has launched the RWJBarnabas Health Workforce Partnership, designed to create unique educational pathways and curricula focused on STEM and allied health professions for Middlesex College and Middlesex County Magnet Schools.
Aligned with the County's Destination 2040 Strategic Plan, which fosters a thriving health and education ecosystem, this initiative will continue to evolve to meet the growing needs of the life science sector.
Key highlights of the RWJBarnabas Health Workforce Partnership include:
- Three specialized educational tracks—including a new program, Sterile Processing Technician, and updated curricula for the Patient Care Technician and Certified Medical Assistant programs.
- Internships and volunteer opportunities for Middlesex College and Magnet School students across the RWJBarnabas Health system.
- Job placement support for students earning degrees or certifications, connecting them with meaningful careers in healthcare.
Middlesex County’s strong AAA bond rating enables it to make transformative investments like this—fueling economic growth, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, and expanding opportunities for residents. The Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center is more than a world-class oncology facility—it is a catalyst for medical innovation, workforce development, and a healthier future for Middlesex County and beyond.
