NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – Middlesex County is sponsoring an essay contest open to 8th, 11th and 12th
graders, allowing them to explore the role freeholders play in governing Middlesex County. From
now until March 4, students can submit ideas that explain what they would do if they were
‘Freeholder for a Day’. One 8th grade winner will receive a $250 scholarship, while an 11th and 12th
grade winner will each win a $500 scholarship.
In their essays, students must answer the question: “If you were a Middlesex County Freeholder,
what would you want to accomplish and why?” A successful response will demonstrate that the
writer understands the role and responsibilities of a Middlesex County Freeholder. Students must
describe a challenge or opportunity they would focus on as a freeholder and identify a program they
would champion or implement to make their idea a reality.
“The Board of Chosen Freeholders has always believed it’s important to inspire our students to learn
about civic and government affairs, and to affect positive change in their community,” said
Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “I can’t wait to see all the wonderful ideas our
students develop.”
