Coinbase is an American cryptocurrency exchange that allows buying, selling and holding various forms of cryptocurrency. It is a widely used exchange, which has made it a target for bad actors that utilize a new scam.
A phishing scam has targeted cell phone users via text with a recent surge nationwide. Below is an example of the message:

Key indicators of this scam include but are not limited to:
- Messages from unknown numbers that are not associated with Coinbase.
- Unsolicited OTP (one-time password) codes or withdrawal notifications. • Requests to call a phone number to “verify” account activity.
- Spelling errors or extremely urgent language
To protect yourself and others from these scams, consider the following:
- DO NOT provide account login information
- Don’t share account activity – Don’t share activity or financial account information.
- Change your password – If you called a phone number from a phishing text scam, it is recommended you change your password. Also call your financial institutions if you provided any financial information.
- Block any phone numbers, report the text as junk/spam, and send a screenshot of the phishing text in a message to security@coinbase.com.
