Summer is here, and one holiday we all look forward to is the celebration of the Fourth of July. It is hard to believe that it has been 249 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in American history. Its signature on July 4, 1776, signified the American colonies' separation from British rule and provided our right to self-govern. One of the best-known parts of the document states that our unalienable rights are “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” To this day, this founding document remains a symbol of freedom for all Americans.
Every year on the Fourth of July, those words “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” are repeated during speeches, parades, and fireworks displays. The principles of the Declaration of Independence are the foundation of our government and inspire other countries to fight for their freedom.
On the Fourth of July, we can honor the Declaration of Independence and reflect on its true meaning in many ways. Take time to read the Declaration of Independence to refresh your memory about its significance for all Americans. Step back in time and visit historic sites such as Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to see where the monumental events took place that solidified America’s freedom. Celebrate with Middlesex County at East Jersey Old Town Village, the County’s premier historical site for living history, for “A Revolutionary Celebration: Independence Day on the Raritan,” an annual Fourth of July event featuring historical stories and reenactors, patriotic-themed music, and food. Inspire your children to use their voice to make a difference in their community by telling them the story of our nation’s founders who fought for our independence. No matter how you decide to celebrate the holiday, take a moment to honor and reflect on the significance of America’s independence.
As Americans, we are all from different backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures, but we come together on this day to celebrate our nation as one.
Celebrating the Fourth of July safely is all about balancing fun with precaution! Here are a few tips to keep your Independence Day safe and enjoyable.
Fireworks safety is a crucial concern this time of year, as the number of injuries caused by fireworks is staggering. In fact, several types of fireworks are banned in New Jersey. The best and safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a fireworks show hosted by your municipality or another municipality in Middlesex County. Check your municipality’s website or a local news site for information about fireworks shows celebrating the Fourth of July.
Grilling safety is another key concern during the holiday and throughout the summer. You should always grill outdoors and keep the grill at least 10 feet from your home or away from anything that can burn. Always supervise the grill and make sure everyone who is not grilling stays away, especially children and pets. After using, remember to clean the grill by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and trays below to further prevent fires.
Water safety is a vital concern to keep in mind as we enjoy swimming in the pool, ocean, or participating in other water-based activities on a hot day. According to the American Red Cross, all pools should be fenced in with appropriate barriers, and a pool alarm, anti-entrapment drain covers, and safety release systems should be installed for extra safety precautions. If you are swimming in the ocean, always swim in a lifeguarded area, and never swim alone, regardless of your age or abilities. Most importantly, keep an eye on your child while swimming and never leave them alone in the presence of any water.
These are just a few precautions to remember as you engage in outdoor activities this holiday.
Show your patriotism by celebrating this holiday! If you are interested in attending a Fourth of July celebration in your community, check with your local municipality for scheduled events.
Happy Fourth of July!
