Raritan Bay Waterfront Park was the first Middlesex County park to be built on the banks of the scenic Raritan Bay. This nautically themed park has breathtaking views of the New York skyline and features a landmark pavilion overlook. The park encompasses 114 acres, of which 86 are considered wetlands, providing a nature study area for park goers interested in exploring its unique flora and fauna. In September of each year, the City of South Amboy hold a Seafood Festival at the park which is an extremely popular event.
The then-named Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders chose Raritan Bay Waterfront Park as the site for the "Victims of Terrorism" memorial, dedicated to all victims of terrorist acts, because of its vantage point from which the New York skyline can be seen on a clear day across the Raritan Bay. The design of the memorial was the result of a competition sponsored jointly by the then-named Board of Chosen Freeholders and The Home News Tribune for students throughout Middlesex County. Elements of three winning entries were incorporated into the final design: The granite base in the shape of a pentagon recognized those lost at the Department of Defense's headquarters (Abdul Rahim, Old Bridge High School East); the white columns, which support an arbor shading a bench, provide a serene area suitable for reflection and remembrance (Josephine Wong, Old Bridge High School East); and the centerpiece is an awe-inspiring four-foot high bronze eagle (Megan Skulski, Sayreville High School).
