Guidelines

Acceptable items include latex (water based) paint, oil based paint, stains, varnishes, lacquers, thinners, spray paint (aerosol) and driveway sealer. Items must be labeled.

Unacceptable items include empty containers or latex paint that is dried out. These may be disposed of with your regular trash. Also unacceptable are household hazardous wastes and contractor/business generated material.

Monthly Schedule

Paint Drop-Off Days are scheduled on weekends, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at various locations, according to the listing below. This service is available free of charge, and is open only to Middlesex County residents.

First Saturday:

The Middlesex County Division of Solid Waste Management is reminding residents that recycling of computers, computer monitors, televisions, printers and fax machines is required by State Law.

Most municipalities have a program for residential generated consumer electronics. Please contact your local public works department for more information.

For residents of towns that do not offer a program, the NJDEP has compiled a list of locations that will accept your consumer electronics at no charge.

Three locations that are on that NJDEP list are:

For printers, computers, computer monitors and fax machines only - no televisions.

Please call the location ahead to confirm this service is ongoing and applicable.

Every resident and business in Middlesex County is required to recycle their textiles.  We define textiles as clean, dry clothing or other fabric measuring at least one foot by one foot in size.

Textiles should not be placed in your curbside recycling bin. Rather, you can use any of the hundreds of donation boxes or pickup services located in and around Middlesex County.

A few tips:

• Make sure you’re only donating items that the organization accepts.  Read the list of acceptable items on the box and do not drop off items that they do not want.

• Clothing does not always need to be in perfect condition to be recycled.  Textiles that cannot be reused in the same form can be sold to make other materials such as rags and carpet padding.

Middlesex County will accept rechargeable and button cell batteries at our household hazardous waste (HHW) days.  

Prevent fires, keep people and property safe. DO NOT throw RECHARGEABLE batteries in the trash or recycling bin.

Rechargeable batteries can be found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, digital cameras, two-way radios, camcorders, and remote control toys.

Rechargeable and Button Cell Batteries should be recycled, but they must be recycled at a drop-off location, not in your curbside bin.  Rechargeable batteries CAN be recycled at many retail locations. Some municipalities participate in the call2recycle program. To find the nearest collection site, use the collection site locator at www.call2recycle.org or call the consumer helpline, 1- 877-2-RECYCLE.

Both rechargeable & button cell batteries must be properly prepared before drop off as new Federal regulations have been enacted to prevent short circuiting of batteries during transport. You must individually bag each battery or tape each terminal end prior to recycling.

Alkaline Batteries fall below Federal and State hazardous waste standards and can be disposed of in the regular trash.  Alkaline batteries include AA, AAA, C, D and 9-V and will have the word “ALKALINE” imprinted on the battery.

Be battery safety smart and responsibly manage your rechargeable batteries at their end of life.

Acceptable Items

Adhesives, aerosol cans, antifreeze, brake fluid, car batteries, cleaners, drain cleaners, fire extinguishers, flares (road only), fluorescent bulbs (no broken bulbs), gasoline, gas/oil mix, kerosene, lighter fluid, mercury, motor oil/filters, paints (latex/oil), paint thinner, pesticides/herbicides, photographic chemicals, pool chemicals, propane tanks, stains/varnishes, thermometers, thermostats.

Rechargeable & button cell batteries (individually bag each battery or tape each terminal end prior to transport). Alkaline batteries can be disposed of in regular trash.

Asbestos containing materials: call to pre-register, must be double bagged.

Non-acceptable Items

Appliances/furniture, computers, electronics, empty containers, explosives and munitions, infectious/medical waste, printers, smoke detectors, televisions, tires.

No containers over 10 gallons.

Important Guidelines

Following the rules below will assist us in getting you through the event as quickly as possible.

• No Plastic Bags. Use a box, crate or other sturdy container – we will give it back to you.
• Limit of 5 file boxes or 100 pounds per car.
• Paper must be in a liftable, manageable container. If it is hard for you to bring it to your car, it is too heavy!

Note: No need to remove paper clips or staples.

Do not bring: Plastic binders/sheet protectors, newspapers, magazines, hardcover books, junk mail, photos, x-rays, CDs, shredded paper or garbage.

Residential personal paper only - no business (home-based or other) paper.

Loads containing unacceptable items will be rejected.
