There shall be a
Department of Transportation whose purpose shall include the promotion mobility
and safety for all and for the establishment of a world class transportation
system in Middlesex County that enhances the quality of life for residents and
shall enhance and maintain the County’s Transportation Infrastructure in a
state of excellence through focused investments and effective cross
jurisdictional collaboration that stimulates and sustains smart development and
economic growth in the County.
The Department shall apply Innovation and
Intelligent Transportation Systems and Technology to adapt to
changing traffic conditions
and environments to
maximize the efficiency
of the operations of the County’s
surface transportation systems.
The Department of
Transportation will consist of and be responsible for functions to include
programs and services
for County residents
provided through the Offices of: Engineering, Planning,
Public Works, Middlesex
County Areawide Transportation and
Keep Middlesex Moving.
The duties of the County Engineer and his office include the provision of engineering advice and assistance to all County departments, agencies, and the Board of Chosen Freeholders. The Office is also responsible for the engineering work and decisions involved with the design, maintenance, and construction of roads, bridges, sewers, buildings, and other projects, as well as the review and approval of plans and specifications, tabulation of bids, recommendation for award of contracts, supervising and inspecting projects to guarantee contract performance, certifying satisfactory contract performance for final payment, and the acceptance of work for all County public works projects.
The Office of Planning's primary responsibility is to prepare a comprehensive development plan for the County and to monitor its implementation. This includes preparing reports of findings and fact for presentation and action by the Planning Board and the Board of Chosen Freeholders. The Planning Board supports advisory committees to assist in the decision making process. These committees relate to a specific function of the Board.
The Office of Public Works is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of all County roads within the jurisdiction of Middlesex County. This Office consists of five maintenance areas geographically located throughout Middlesex County and six specialty areas.
