Join Middlesex County and coLAB Arts for a Story Slam performance on September 26 at 7 pm at the State Theatre New Jersey in New Brunswick. This event is free of charge and open to all community members.
The evening’s stories are unified around the theme of Destinations: the people, places, and everything in between where you are and where you want to be. The event will feature local storytellers sharing their own unique experiences living and working in Middlesex County. Using inspiration from their lives, these performers have transformed their personal experiences in Middlesex County into captivating stories to share with the audience.
“While we have been collecting data from our County residents’ in more traditional ways for Destination 2040, including an online survey, the Story Slam gives us an opportunity to paint a better picture of how decision-making at the county and local levels impacts those who live and work in Middlesex County. This will inform how we make decisions in the future, giving emotional context and color to the planning process,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “We are thrilled to be hosting this event at one of our County’s greatest and most-iconic venues, the State Theatre New Jersey.”
Audience members will also have the opportunity to participate by providing written Destination stories that will be displayed and selectively read by coLAB Arts artists on stage.
This performance is part of Rutgers Public Outreach and Engagement Team’s (POET) extensive public engagement effort for Destination 2040, the update of the County’s master plan. The purpose of the Destinations story slam is to ensure that voices from Middlesex County’s diverse communities are heard as part of the process of determining the County’s priorities. CoLAB Arts, a New Brunswick-based non-profit arts organization, has been working extensively with each of the performers, through a series of storytelling workshops designed to help them hone the craft of narrative storytelling.
Following the storytelling performances, audience members can also share their own Destinations stories and insights, through a “talk back” with the performers and the coLAB artists.
Light refreshments will be served following the story slam. An RSVP is requested, so please visit http://www.colab-arts.org/calendar/destinationslam or call (848) 932-2876.
