The Middlesex County Hazardous Materials Unit has a variety of capabilities available in order to assist all of the police, fire, and emergency medical personnel working within the county. The capabilities include but not limited to mass casualty decontamination, patient decontamination, identification of unknown materials, and odor investigations. The equipment utilized ranges from simple pH paper to identify whether a substance is an acid or a base to sensitive air monitoring meters to sophisticated chemical and radiological identification technology. The unit has six pieces of apparatus, each designed with a specific purpose. For instance, HM-4 is designated as a hydrocarbon truck, which carries a large amount of absorbents for sizable fuel spills on land and in water.
