The Department of Business Development and Education is responsible for the functions, programs and services necessary to promote the economic development and tourism of the County.

Office of Culture and Heritage

This Office’s mission is to promote public interest in local and county history, in the arts, and in the cultural values, goals, and traditions of the community, the State and the Nation. This office is responsible for ensuring the continuing cultural legacy of the County though the establishment, research and maintenance of historic sites, resources, and cultural programs.

Economic and Business Development

This Office serves as the primary County business source, servicing both the public & private sectors. This Office also develops marketing plans while addressing the needs of the current and future business community and manages demographics, statistical analysis, and provides financial and technical assistance to the business community.

Extension Services

This Office is cooperatively funded by the County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides practical education and research regarding agriculture, nutrition and more; and oversees various community programs. The Department’s other work with Extension Services includes coordination and acting as a liaison with the Superintendent of Schools, Middlesex County Vocational - Technical Schools and Middlesex County College.

The Middlesex County Office of the New Jersey Department of Education functions as a state/county coordinating agency charged with providing educational leadership for all public school districts in the County. To facilitate this agency, the Superintendent is responsible for acting as a representative of the Commissioner of Education of the State Department of Education regarding education laws, rules and regulations; assisting applicants in obtaining Teacher Certification; working with school administrators; and serving on the Board of Education, among other duties.

Workforce Development

This Office’s directive is to administer federal and state job training funds for the benefit of County residents. This Office also acts as liaison between the Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Middlesex County Workforce Investment Board to establish programs to prepare youth and adults for entry into the labor force and to afford job training for eligible individuals facing serious barriers to employment, who are in special need of training to obtain productive employment.
